Batting

What a batter did at the plate.

GGames

Games the player appeared in as a batter or a runner.

PAPlate appearances
AB + BB + HBP + SF + SH

Every completed turn at bat, however it ended. A catcher's interference is not one: it counts only in CI.

ABAt-bats
PA - BB - HBP - SF - SH

Plate appearances that count toward the batting average: walks, hit by pitches and sacrifices are left out.

RRuns scored

Runs the book credits to the player. A run scored by a temporary runner belongs to the player they ran for.

aRActual runsSelf-composed

Runs the player scored themselves. R gives a temporary runner's run to the player they ran for; aR keeps it with the runner. Otherwise the two are the same.

HHits
1B + 2B + 3B + HR

Times the batter reached safely on a batted ball without an error or a fielder's choice.

2BDoubles

Hits on which the batter reached second base.

3BTriples

Hits on which the batter reached third base.

HRHome runs

Hits on which the batter scored, over the fence or inside the park.

IHRInside-the-park home runs

Home runs on a ball that stayed in play.

XBHExtra-base hits
2B + 3B + HR

Hits for more than one base.

RBIRuns batted in

Runs that scored because of what the batter did. No RBI on a double play, on an error with two out, or for a run that scored on an error, wild pitch or passed ball.

BBWalks
UBB + IBB

Four balls, intentional or not.

IBBIntentional walks

Walks the defence chose to give.

HBPHit by pitch

Times the batter was awarded first base after being hit by a pitch.

SOStrikeouts

Plate appearances that ended on a third strike, swinging or looking.

SHSacrifice bunts

Bunts that moved a runner up at the cost of the batter. Not an at-bat.

SFSacrifice flies

Fly outs on which a runner scored. Not an at-bat.

CIReached on catcher interference

Times the batter was awarded first base because the catcher interfered with the swing. It is counted here and nowhere else: not a plate appearance, an at-bat, a walk or a time on base.

ROEReached on error

Times the batter reached base because a fielder made an error. An at-bat without a hit.

GIDPGrounded into double play

Ground balls on which two outs were made.

BuntBunts and slaps in play

Balls put in play from a bunt or a slap, whatever came of them.

AVGBatting average
H / AB

How often an at-bat ends in a hit.

OBPOn-base percentage
(H + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF)

How often the batter reaches base without making an out. Intentional walks count. A catcher's interference is neither a time on base nor in the denominator.

tOBPOn-base percentage without intentional walks
(H + UBB + HBP) / (AB + UBB + HBP + SF)

OBP with the intentional walks left out of both halves.

SLGSlugging
TB / AB

Total bases an at-bat. A single counts one, a home run four.

OPSOn-base plus slugging
OBP + SLG

Getting on base and hitting for power in one number.

ISOIsolated power
SLG - AVG

Extra bases an at-bat: slugging with the singles taken out.

BABIPAverage on balls in play
(H - HR + IHR) / (AB - SO - HR + IHR + SF)

How often a ball put in play falls for a hit. Home runs over the fence are out of both halves; one that stayed in the park is a ball in play.

BACONAverage on balls in play, home runs included
H / (AB - SO + SF)

BABIP with every home run left in: all hits over the at-bats that were not strikeouts, plus sacrifice flies.

BB%Walk rate
BB / PA

Share of plate appearances that end in a walk.

K%Strikeout rate
SO / PA

Share of plate appearances that end in a strikeout.

BB%-K%Walk rate minus strikeout rate
BB% - K%

Walk rate less strikeout rate, in percentage points.

SecASecondary average
(TB - H + BB + SB - CS) / AB

Bases gained beyond the single: extra bases, walks and steals, an at-bat.

RCRuns created
(H + BB) x TB / (AB + BB)

An estimate of the runs a batter's line produced: times on base multiplied by bases advanced, over opportunities.

wOBAWeighted on-base averageAdmin's favorite
sum(event weight) / (AB + UBB + HBP + SF)

On-base percentage with each way of reaching base counted for what it is worth in runs. Intentional walks are out of the weights and the denominator. The weights are the competition's own once it has played enough.

wRAAWeighted runs above average
(wOBA - lgwOBA) / wOBA scale x PA

Runs the batter added with the bat compared with an average batter in the same number of plate appearances.

wRCWeighted runs created
wRAA + PA x lgR/PA

Runs the batter created in all, from wOBA.

wRC+Weighted runs created plus
100 x (wRAA / PA + lgR/PA) / lgR/PA

Runs created a plate appearance against the competition, where 100 is average and 120 is 20% better.

FBFly balls

Balls in play hit in the air to the outfield.

GBGround balls

Balls in play hit on the ground.

PUPop ups

Balls in play hit high and short.

Baserunning

Stealing, and what a runner's legs were worth. "Actual" stats go to whoever ran; official ones follow the book, where a temporary runner's base belongs to the player they ran for.

OppSteal opportunitiesSelf-composed

One for every plate appearance that began with the player standing on a base, from any base and whether or not the base ahead was open. Two runners on is two opportunities. An attempt from a situation the plate appearance did not begin in (the runner reached that base during it) adds one, so Att% never passes 100%.

SBAOfficial stolen base attempts
SB + CS

Attempts the book credits to the player.

aSBAActual stolen base attemptsSelf-composed
aSB + aCS

Steals and times caught stealing, as scored, by the player who ran.

How often the player's own attempts succeed.

PkOPicked off

Times the runner was put out by a pickoff throw.

AdvAdvances on a throw

Bases taken while the defence threw somewhere else.

Att%Attempt rate
aSBA / Opp

How often the runner goes when they could.

xAttExpected attemptsSelf-composed
sum(Opp x lg attempt rate)

The attempts the tournament would have made with the same opportunities in the same situations. A situation is the base the runner is on, whether the base ahead is taken and how many are out; the tournament rate in it is every runner of that season together, the player included.

AAAAttempts above averageAdmin's favoriteSelf-composed
aSBA - sum(Opp x lg attempt rate)

How much more often a runner goes than the tournament would in their place. Every steal opportunity is sorted by its situation - which base the runner is on, which bases ahead of them are taken (a runner on third is told apart only by first and third with second empty), how many are out - and the tournament has an attempt rate for each of the 24. Adding those rates up over the runner's own opportunities gives the attempts an average runner would have made (xAtt); AAA is the attempts actually made less that number. +2.0 means two more attempts than average with the same chances, 0 is the tournament average, below zero is a runner who stays put. It measures the decision to go, not whether it worked, and counts whoever ran. A team's or a manager's AAA is its runners' added up.

AAA+Attempts above average plusSelf-composed
100 x aSBA / sum(Opp x lg attempt rate)

Attempts as a share of what the tournament would have made, where 100 is the tournament average. Shown from one expected attempt.

RAIRelative aggressiveness indexSelf-composed
aSBA / sum(Opp x highest attempt rate)

How close to the most aggressive runner (or team, on a team's line) in each situation. The highest rate in a situation is the highest among those with at least five opportunities in it, or the player's own if that is higher, so 100% is running as often as whoever runs most and it never passes that.

SPDSpeed score
mean(SB%, SBA, 3B, R, GIDP marks)

Five signs of speed, each marked out of ten and averaged: stealing success, how often they go, triples, runs scored once on base, and double plays avoided.

wSBStolen-base runsAdmin's favorite
aSB x runSB + aCS x runCS - lgwSB x (1B + BB + HBP - IBB)

Runs gained or lost by stealing, against an average runner who reached first as often. A row for one situation is measured against the tournament in that situation.

wGDPDouble-play runs
(GIDP chances x lgGIDP% - GIDP) x R/out

Runs saved by staying out of double plays, against the tournament's rate in the same chances.

UBRUltimate base running
sum(RE after - RE average for that hit) - average runner

Runs gained by taking the extra base on hits, measured in run expectancy against what that hit usually leaves.

BsRBaserunning runs

ResRespect runsAdmin's favoriteSelf-composed
(chances x lg attempt rate - SBA) x run value of an attempt

Runs saved by not being run on at all: the attempts the tournament would have made against this catcher that nobody dared. FRMFraming, WOWYSelf-composed
100 x called strikes / expected called strikes

Called strikes among the pitches taken with the catcher behind the plate, against what the same pitchers get from other catchers (with or without you): each pitcher's share of taken pitches called strikes over the competition's seasons, less this catcher's that season, times the pitches this catcher took of theirs. It does not allow for the umpire or the pitch location. 100 is average; from 150 taken pitches.

FrRVFraming runs, WOWYSelf-composed
(called strikes - expected) x run value of a strike

The extra called strikes from framing, in runs. A strike in place of a ball is worth the difference between the two counts it leads to, from how the competition's own plate appearances went through each count.

LocFRMFraming, by locationSelf-composed
100 x called strikes / expected called strikes

Called strikes among the catcher's located taken pitches, against how often the competition calls a strike at that distance from the edge of the batter's zone (a curve fitted to its own located calls, with 200 needed). 100 is average; from 150 located taken pitches.
